Day 35 – Bolsena

The day started with boring farm fields but finished with beautiful lake views and a wonderful finishing town. I was a little down on Lazio after yesterday, but the area I’m in right now is lovely.

Q: Bill, it’s been five weeks, how are you holding up mentally and physically?

My fitness is great. The last two days were each 15 miles, and they both seemed pretty easy.

My only problem physically is my left foot. Ever since that 21 mile day, I’ve had some plantar fasciitis and maybe some tendinitis.  Fortunately, with Motrin, stretching, and elevating it in the evening, the pain isn’t bad. I’m glad I’ve only got a few days left, though. My feet could use some rest.

As for my mind, about this time on every Camino, I reach the point where I’m ready to finish up. Each day is entertaining, but I’m looking forward to getting back home to Shirley and our normal routine.

That said, arriving in this very cute town was definitely good for my spirits. Last night’s town was pretty sucky, so having a beautiful village to explore is appreciated.

My morning looked like this
Potato harvesting
Saw lots of dead sunflowers today. I wondered why farmers left them to die. Found this answer online: “To ensure seeds are ready for harvest, they must be dry. Allowing sunflowers to dry naturally in the field saves time and money compared to artificial drying methods.”
Josephine from England. Met her with the kids back near Lucca. I see her nearly every day.
Lots of great lake views during the second half of the hike
View of the Bolsena fort as I approached town
Entering Bolsena
Bolsena streets. As you can see, it’s a charming town.
Church of Santa Cristina. It was visited by Archbishop Sigeric on his original trip over 1000 years ago.

  1. That terrace view is incredible! My jaw dropped when you emerged from your hotel room and showed the water and rooftops of the town. Hope you had an amazing lunch up there.

  2. See if you can get some ice for the foot too.  And do the toe curls
(sitting put a towel on the floor and pull it towards you with your
toes), and roll the foot over a water bottle to massage.

Then go home and watch the movie My Left Foot

    Keep on Trucking,

      1. Sometimes, if you say it is for  pain/swelling they will give you ice.
Our friend on our cycling trip this year to Croatia had a hamstring
surgery 10 yrs ago that sitting on a bike seat 4 hrs a day aggravated
the area.  She got ice from several of the bars, restaurants and hotel
lobbies.  Although, she was not a poor pilgrim.

I am so happy you are feeling good healthwise!  Your walks amaze me.
