Do I need a cell phone on the Camino?
Having a smartphone is becoming a necessity on the Camino. There are apps and downloadable maps available that help you navigate when signage is confusing or missing.
How is cell service on the Camino?
On the routes I’ve been on, it’s been decent, but like any rural place there are areas without coverage. The good news is that GPS works fine without a cell signal, as long as you have downloaded the maps ahead of time.
Can I use my U.S. cell phone in Europe?
For Verizon and AT&T users, this is very easy. Once you land in Europe and turn your phone on, you’ll get a text notifying that you are about to start using their international service. From that point on you will be charged $12 a day for any day that you use your phone (or you can deny the service, if you want). This charge will be issued for a maximum of 10 days a month. Once you hit $120 dollars of fees, there will be no more charges until the end of 30 days. Then the count restarts.
This option is expensive, but I tend to use a lot of data, even when I travel, so I find this option very convenient. Plus, I get to keep my own phone number while I’m traveling.
Is there a cheaper option for cell phone service in Europe?
If you’re traveling on a tight budget getting a SIM card or eSIM will offer you a more affordable cellular plan for your travel.
I’m not an expert on phone options, but there are plenty of travel bloggers out there that have written up their tips. Do some googling to find out what you need to know.
Here’s a quick summary:
SIMS – When you arrive in Europe, there are many stores where you can get a SIM card for your phone (and/or get a second device). The SIM will have a pre-paid amount on them for calls, texting and data (which you can later add to). My understanding is that in most cases, this will be cheaper than the plans from the US carriers.
ESIMS – On newer phones, it’s possible to get the same functionality of a SIM card without the need for a physical card. Before you travel, you download all the necessary carrier information.
