Where to get more information about the Camino

Guidebooks

If you’re thinking about walking a particular Camino route, then I’d suggest buying a guidebook early on. Each book has an introduction which will give you general information about the Camino, and then stage-by-stage information covering where to walk, where to stay and what to see.

John Brierly’s Camino Frances and Camino Portuguese guidebooks are the most popular available.

Personally, I like the books Cicerone Press. They have hundreds of books covering walks all over Europe.

Apps

You’ll find several mobile phone apps for each of the popular routes. Most of the apps include lodging information as well as maps and often GPS support.

Ivar’s Camino de Santiago Forum

Ivar is a bit of Camino legend. He runs a shop in Santiago where he supports pilgrims, but he’s also the operator of the largest online forum for the Camino… caminodesantiago.me. Warning, it’s a little overwhelming when you first join the site, but you’ll figure it out. Every possible question has been asked and answered there many times over.

Gronze.com

Gronze.com is a comprehensive web site guide (and app) to the Camino and many other historic routes. Gronze is maintained in Spanish. To view in English, use a browser like Safari that has automatic translation options.

I regularly use Gronze to plan my Caminos because their stage-by-stage maps show clearly all the towns with lodging and food options.

Facebook and Reddit

There are also plenty of Facebook groups for the Camino. So many, that it gets a little confusing. I also am a member of a couple of groups on Reddit. Those are a little less overwhelming.

Ask a pilgrim

I have never met a Camino pilgrim that isn’t happy to talk about the Camino. In fact, most of us talk about it much more than our friends and family like. They wish we would shut-up. Reach out to someone, and they’ll surely help.

Keep in mind though, there are as many ways to do a Camino as there are people. Don’t take the advice of anyone (including me) as definitive. Instead, look at all the info and make your own call.
