Day 1 – Saint-Palais

Great day. 13.6 miles (21.9 km). Mostly flat. A couple of hills.

We had fun right from the start. Pleasant temps and many wonderful views. Unfortunately, it got hot near the end, but we powered through.

There were no good lodging options at our end point, so we took a taxi to the next town. I did this last year also (so do many pilgrims).

One of us tripped and fell early in today’s hike. I won’t say who it was (but it wasn’t Ann or me). Fortunately, no lasting injuries.

Q: Is everyone carrying their bags?

Carol and Ann opted to use a transfer service for their bags. That makes the walk more enjoyable for them. Their bags arrived shortly after us at our hotel. Perfect.

Q: Do you walk together?

So far, it’s a mix. At the start we walked together and talked. For the second half of the day, we mostly walked alone but always in sight of each other. We’ll see how things go in the coming days.

Trail was varied today. Some fields. Some woods. Lovely rolling hills. Lots of farms.
I met these two gite owners last year and saw them again today. They remembered me (mainly because of the fellow pilgrim that I was with). They are so nice and took care of us as we waited for our ride. They work every day for 7 months, then close-up the business and go on five months vacation.
We walked past a small foie gras factory. They have cold drinks and chairs for pilgrims. It was a much needed resting spot for us. Fortunately, eating liver was optional.
Tall corn and rolling hills.
Ann has been pleased and surprised with all the Christian markings on the pilgrimage route.
The view from my hotel room. This was one of my favorite towns last year, and it’s nice to be back. We learned many businesses are closed for holiday today. We have dinner reservations for tonight at the restaurant on the right (with the people). One of only two or three restaurants that are open.
Parade in Saint-Palais today. I’m not sure what the holiday is.
Moo.
