Day 5 – Burguette

We had another tough day of climbing then a long downhill to the monastery in Roncevalles. 13.9 miles walked. 2600 feet of climbing. 2444 feet of descent.

It was drizzling when we started the hike, but it didn’t last long. We had low lying clouds nearly the whole day, so most of the great views were blocked, but the clouds provided a different kind of beauty.

We met many people at last night’s lodging and we saw many of them over and over again along the trail. That was lot of fun.

We crossed into Navarre, Spain today. One country down.

Q: Do you carry food with you on the trail?

Yep. we try to keep some fruit and other snacks in our bag to fill us along the walk. Our host last night made us sandwiches to carry today. Those tasted good when we made it down the mountain.

Some of our new friends that stayed with us at Borda. Group includes people from Korea, France, Australia, Holland, Spain and the United States.
Setting out in the rain.
Ann and Carol early in the hike.
Spain!
Spain!
Lots of black slugs on the trail today. Most were about 6-inches long.
There were a few routes down the mountain today. The one Ann and I chose had about a mile of nice forest walking.
Roncevalles in the distance.
The courtyard of the Roncevalles monastery. It’s now a hostel for pilgrims and you can see several pilgrim waiting for it to open.
Our hotel in Burguette. Earnest Hemmingway stayed here and wrote about it in The Sun Also Rises.
More horse bells!!!
The cow gods decided to scare the bejesus out of me.

  1. Beautiful photos and videos; thank you. I am starting CF on September 28th and getting worried about the climb after seeing your videos, yikes! Please advise:

    – did you have your packs shipped to Borda and Hotel Burguette?
    – what time did you leave SPJJ to go to Borda and how long did it take you?

    Enjoy!

    1. If you have moderate fitness and take your time, it’s hard but very doable. People of many shapes and sizes succeed every day.

My sisters had bags delivered and that worked great. Btw… Borda is great. Strongly recommend staying there to divide up the climb.
