Day 9 – Estella

A much easier day then yesterday but still some challenging hills. Total distance for today: 15.0 miles.

Ann and Carol are starting to feel the social vibe of the Camino. They regularly talk with other pilgrims we see over and over again along the trail. Carol sat for an hour or so after dinner last night talking with some pilgrims. If you know Carol, that’s not a normal thing. But on the Camino things are different.

Q: Are there pets on the Camino?

Not many, but yes, some people walk with their dogs. Not all lodgings will allow dogs, so it requires more planning.

Q: How many steps do you take in a day?

Over the last seven days I’ve taken 203,599 steps. That’s an average of 33,933.

Leaving Puente le Reina over the queen’s bridge.
A common site outside cafes along the Camino. I haven’t heard of any theft but in these tiny villages it seems unlikely. I wouldn’t leave my bag unattended in bigger cities, though.
View from about 2/3 the way through today’s hike.
Roman bridge outside of Cirauqui.
1638 marker in Cirauqui. I tried to find its history but had no luck.
Plaza Santiago, Estella
Estella.
We saw our first vineyard today. We’re on the edge of the Rioja region.
Here are a few views as we walk through some towns.

  1. How frequently are the Camino shell navigational markers placed in towns and out in the country? I only noticed one in the video as you navigated through the twisty-turny towns. Do pilgrims get lost?

      1. Don’t listen to Bill. Watson is a very spiritual dog and he would do great on the Camino.

  2. When you talk with other pilgrims, do they tend to say much about why they’re walking the Camino? I’m wondering whether it’s relatively common that they are doing it as an expression of spiritual seeking or devotion.

  3. Most of the cafes and shops seem clean and quaint and looks like you’ve always had reasonably good food. Have you come across a place that was a dump with crappy food? One that was a ‘one star’ review?
