Day 11 – Viana

We had a relatively short day today. 12.5 miles.

Tonight is my last night with “the sisters” (as they are known by many on the trail). I’ll walk a few miles with them tomorrow before heading south so I can meet Shirley in Athens on Friday.

Q: How does a solo Camino compare to one with your sisters?

The best part of being with my sisters is seeing the Camino through their eyes. For example, watching Ann’s eyes open wide as she tasted a new savory dish. Or seeing Carol’s amazement with the Pamplona street life.

It’s also nice sharing challenges. Only the three of us know the suffering of climbing a big hill in France in 94 degree weather. We’ll be able to talk (and laugh) about that for years.

I think the biggest downside of doing a Camino with others is that it’s harder to meet other pilgrims. When you walk alone or eat alone, it opens up the door to starting many conversations and building many friendships.

Even so, the Camino is great no matter how you do it.

Early morning pilgrim shadows.
More great views and great weather.
Ann led the way today.
Stacked hay is a relatively common sight this time of year.
Lots of vineyards and olive trees today.
We tasted some grapes today. They were very small but very sweet.
Viana streets during lunchtime. Busy with pilgrims taking a break.
The quiet streets later in the day.
Viana town square. Most people stop at the much larger city of Logroño a few miles down the trail, but Viana is a lovely town. Glad we stopped here instead.

Impressive shepherd.

  1. The video reminds me of this passage from the gospel of John: “And the sheep listen to the voice of the shepherd. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he brings all his sheep out, he goes ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger. They will run away from him because they don’t know his voice.”

  2. The sheep and shepherd video was one of your best!

We all know how much you love animals, so your next challenge will be a month apprentice shepherding!!

  3. Bill you’ve trained them well
You’ve been an amazing guide, Spanish interpreter, and encourager. You know the Camino provides.
I will miss your posts. Enjoy Greece. My sister is in Greece and says it’s crowded.

  4. Love seeing your adventure with your sisters. Glad you had an opportunity to experience this event both solo and with others 🙂

  5. Words cannot express how much I love the pilgrim shadows photo (I see copyright. T-shirts, let’s talk), though I admit I’m biased, and the sheep episode ending with them following Carol!! Seeing you guys having this epic adventure together leaves me speechless – and you know how rare that is.

  6. This video has inspired me towards a new goal… quit my day job and become a shepherd with my dogs! Looks like fun
