Day 1 – Ludlow (The Governor’s Inn)

First day is in the books. 12.1 miles and 1200 feet of hills. It was a very pleasant walk mostly on quiet dirt roads. As expected, lots of trees, and occasional mountain views.

There are four other hikers walking with me this week. Maryann and Keith are from Texas, but they also have a home on Cape Cod. Ellen is from Colorado, and she’s here with her daughter Amy who now lives in Vermont. They’re staying at all the same B&B’s as us, so it’s been fun talking over dinner and on the trail.

Ellen and Amy walking on a paved portion of the route. This was taken a few minutes after they saw a bear on the road ahead of them. (I didn’t see it.)
Maryann and Keith walking out of Proctorsville in the morning.
Today’s walk compressed into 2 minutes.

The Governor’s Inn

Tonight, we’re staying at the Governor’s Inn. Its lovely, and has a long history including be visited by many movie stars in the past like Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

All the meals we’ve had so far have been great. Tonight… cucumber and avocado soup, pork chops with butternut squash couscous, and maple panna cotta for dessert. There’s a lot of maple in this state.

Shirley’s and Mary’s Day

Today, we all started our day with a tasty breakfast at our B&B. While all the walkers were dressed for the road, Mary and Shirley enjoyed breakfast in their comfy robes. They are quickly adapting to the B&B life.

While we were walking, Mary and Shirley headed to a local horse farm where they took a private trail ride. They reported it was a lovely trail, had nice horses, and was led by friendly guides. They gave it two big thumbs up.

  2. I’m loving the double experience we are getting from the Hikers to the B&Bers. Looking forward to more updates as the days go by!

  3. Sounds like fun! But was it 1200 ft uphill all at once? And then 1200 ft back down? If not, I’m not impressed 🙂

  4. Loved the video……….you walk at a pretty fast pace! Beautiful views and solitude! Glad Shirley is enjoyed her trip as well!

Have fun and keep making memories!
