Day 11 – Ansião

Today was another lovely walk. It was a mix of old buildings, cobbled roads, and old farmhouses. Since getting away from Lisbon and some of the big farms, the landscapes have been great, and the trails have been peaceful.

It was cloudy all day, and got quite foggy when I reached higher altitudes. Sunshine makes photos look better, but cloud cover makes the walking easier. Nice and cool.

My walk was only 13 miles today (I thought it would be a little longer). The first half was mostly uphill (1300 feet vertical), then downhill most of the way to my finishing town.

How is the food in Portugal?

Okay, but it’s too early to judge. Since dinners start around 8:00PM, I haven’t gone out regularly for nicer meals. The few restaurants that are open earlier have generally served food like sandwiches or pizza.

I had a great fish dish in Fátima, and a couple of meat dishes that I’ve liked, but I can’t say I’ve had a representative sample of Portuguese food yet. So I’ll give you a better review in a couple of weeks.

One pattern is emerging though… they serve french fries with everything.

Another pattern… the baked goods are great. Europe does bakeries right.

Also… Wine is cheaper than water or soda. That’s common in Europe, but weird for us Americans .

  1. COD, COD, COD…The Portuguese love their cod fish.  Looks like you are
taking in enough calories for the amount of walking you are doing.

    You are an inspiration!

  2. Loved the photo with the blue flowers along the road. Glad to hear you have gotten away from the busy roads with no shoulder. Looks like beautiful countryside. Thanks for the food shots. You know I am all about the food. You need to learn to stay up later and get in on the late night dinner scene. Walk on!!

  3. Bill, I am really enjoying this journey as I have the previous ones. Those grapes look spectacular. Did you try one?
