Day 17 – Albergaria-a-Velha

One of the more boring stages so far. Combination of industrial and road walking for most of the day. You can’t win them all.

The only really interesting thing was walking for a short time over an old Roman road and Roman bridge. Of course I also had to walk over a long highway bridge. There was a guardrail, fortunately.

Halfway

It’s my 17th day of walking and I’ve just hit the 200 mile mark. So I’m half way on this 34 day 400 mile Camino.

The Daily Rythm

Maybe the best thing about the Camino is the simplicity. There is a basic rhythm to the day that doesn’t change much. Day after day, you do the same thing.

Here’s what my day usually looks like:

Breakfast

  • Usually around 7:30. Some lodgings come with breakfast which is ideal. Otherwise, I drop by a bakery.

Walking

  • I usually start around 9:00AM, but on some days it could be earlier or later. I base it on how far I have to walk, when I can check-in, and how interesting the next city is.

Lunch

  • Usually after I’m done walking (around 2:00).

Lodging Check-in

  • Usually around 3:00.

Wash Clothes, Shower, Rest

  • Usually 3:00-5:00 or so. Rest usually involves surfing the internet on my phone, or starting my blog post. I also give Shirley a call, unless she’s playing pickle ball or otherwise pretending my absence isn’t crushing her soul.

Explore, get a drink, have dinner

  • 5:00-7:00. I really should get dinner at 8 or 8:30, so I could enjoy the Portuguese restaurant scene, but I just can’t motivate myself to eat that late, especially when I’m by myself.

Go to sleep

  • Most days, lights out by 10 or 11.

Repeat the next day

  • And the day after that, and the day after that, and…
