Day 0 – Lausanne

We arrived in Lausanne last night, and spent today exploring the town including walking a few miles along the lake-front promenade and visiting the Lausanne Cathedral.

Lausanne sits on Lake Geneva, and is a short train ride from Geneva. It’s very hilly here, like San Francisco. It feels like everywhere we go we’re on an incline.

Lake Geneva is quite large (45 miles long). As a reference for you Michiganders, it’s about 10 times bigger than Michigan’s largest inland lake (Houghton Lake), and about half as big as Lake St. Clair (known by a few blasphemous locals as the 6th great lake).

While we explored a lot today, we also did plenty of relaxing. We’re ready to start walking tomorrow.

Climbing up the hill to the cathedral. We eventually climbed to the top of the bell tower. A highlight of our trip so far.
Construction of this cathedral started in 1160. Originally Catholic, it became a protestant church in 1535.

  1. Wow, what a great place to start your hike from, Bill. Have a great time. You’re an inspiration to all of us younger folks.

  2. How right you are about the size of Lake Geneva! We took an hour boat ride around the lake, and I think we we toured only 1/4 of the lake.

I hope your first day of walking is magical. xo

  3. This looks like a great start to this year’s adventure, Bill. The framing and composition of your photo “Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Lausanne” is stunning with the night tones. Are you using the same camera/phone from your previous journeys, or is this new equipment/software? Buen Camino to you and your fellow travelers.
