Day 5 – Orsières

Wow. What a beautiful hike today. It was our hardest hike so far, but the scenery made it all worthwhile.

The next two days will also be very challenging. Lots of climbing since we’re on our way to the Great Saint Bernard Pass which is 8100 feet above sea level.

Q: What’s your daily schedule like?

The beauty of pilgrimage is the sameness of each day. You fall into a peaceful routine. For us, that is:

7:30ish… Breakfast

9:00ish… Walk

2:00ish… Arrive at finishing town and check into hotel. Rest for several hours in room. Do laundry. Shower.

5:00… Meet for a beer.

6:00ish… Find dinner

8:00ish… Head back to our rooms to relax and sleep.

Then do it all again the next day.

Roman ruins as we left Martigny.
We’ve left the Rhône valley, and now we’re following the Dranse river
We walked through several cute mountain villages today including Bovernier.
Most of the second half of the hike was open trails with amazing views.
Entering Sembrancher. We stopped in this town for a drink and some rest.
After our rest, we had some steep sections taking us high above the river valley
Sembrancher from the trail above
The views were like this for the last two hours or so of our hike
Sorry, these photos all start to look alike, but we couldn’t stop taking photos. It was amazing.

Here’s a video of some of the walk:

Today’s Data:

  1. You mentioned the Great St Bernard pass’ elevation is about 8100 feet. Have you ever had to climb that high on previous hikes?

  2. You are really feeding my camino/chemin bug! Just under two years to retirement, then I hope to follow this path as well. So, so beautiful!
