It was the best of hikes.
It was the worst of hikes.
The day started with a little rain, but quickly gave way to blue skies and incredible views. It looked like it would be one of my best days ever…
Then everything went to Hell. I spent about 90 minutes plodding through mud including a lung crushing steep uphill.
When I realized I had 1-2 hours more of mud ahead of me, I called an audible. I abandoned the Via Francegina official route, and used Google Maps to route me to my hotel on roads.
Great decision. Day saved.
I do confess to dropping a loud F Bomb as I struggled in the mud. Fortunately, it’s not on video, but some of my struggles are captured in the video below. I know folks like Mike M, Bob C and Greg T. will enjoy my suffering.

I get super cranky if I have to do more than a tenth of a mile in mud out here on our California trails, so I admire your UPHILL accomplishment and your wise decision to abandon and seek out the roadway.
Oh Bill, we all enjoy your suffering!
I’m here for you Bob.
William, I take no pleasure in your muddy misadventure. I’m just thankful Scott wasn’t there to deliver what would have been the butt-kicking of the century.
Who knew that mud was your nemesis?!
I think this has been your best day yet, at least as far as entertainment value for your readers😂
Slog on, dear friend. Slog on.
love that the word “mud” annotated the chart. Thanks for the travelogue. Italy is my favorite non-U.S. country. More pictures of food!
Okay, I promise more food!!!
