Have you ever heard of it? It’s one of Italy’s 20 regions. It stretches across the country near the knee of the boot. Its famous cities of Bologna and Ravenna are far to the east. Here on it’s western side, it’s very rural with few towns of significant size.
That said, it’s beautiful. Rolling hills. Low lying mountains. Forests. Even some wild horses. (Unfortunately, haven’t seen those.)
Q: Which of Italy’s regions does your hike take you through?
I’ll be walking through seven of them: Aosta Valley, Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Liguria and Lazio.
One of my goals is to get to all 20. After this trip, I’ll have been to 11. Need to come back. Anybody want to walk across Umbria and Abruzzo?
The old route markers remind me of the ones in SpainThe village of Cassio in the distanceA bench with a view was the location of my first break of the dayMy whole day looked like this. View after view after view after view. The streets of CassioSeveral times, I found my self walking on mountain ridges with gorgeous views to both the left and the rightA trail maker along the way. Apparently, if I keep walking, I can go all the way to Jerusalem.I love seeing the villages in the distanceNot a good signThe streets of Berceto, the town where I am spending the nightI’m staying at a cute little apartment tonight called “Casa del Marty.” I figured it was named after the owner. Nope, it’s named after “Marty McFly.” The owners seem to love the movie “Ritorno al Futuro.”I was asked to post more photos of food. Pumpkin Ravioli. Polenta with Wild Boar. (Tell Shirley I ordered a salad but chef came out and said they were all out. Really!)

The videos are great.
Italy is truly a beautiful place. My most striking memory of my three weeks is that everything, no matter where you look, hold beaty…. the rolling hills, the architecture, even the behind-the-scenes utility areas at farms. It’s all stunning.

Without a doubt, this is the most consistently beautiful route I’ve taken.
Yay! Food photos! Thanks for heeding the call of the masses. Love the skinny cobbled streets.
