Day 36 – Montefiascone

Another very pleasant day with lake views, forests and moderate hills.

Q: Bill, what are your least favorite things about Europe?

Top of the list, smoking. It’s much more prevalent here. People have to smoke outside, but many of the desireable restaurants and cafes are outside, and people will often smoke in these.

Secondly, cars in old town areas. Some of the most charming streets and piazzas are ruined by cars zipping through them. The towns that maintain pedestrian-only zones are my favorites.

Thirdly, napkins. The napkins in dispensers are totally useless. It’s like trying to wipe something up with a newspaper.

Finally, toilets. I hate to be crude, but lets just say, the toilets don’t always fully flush things down. Most have scrub brushes nearby, presumably to help address this.

Oh yeah, one more. Ice. You’re lucky if you get one cube with your drink.

But that list is pretty short, so I’ll be back!

The palazzo I stayed in last night is mostly a museum now. It was owned by the same family for over 400 years, and many famous dignitaries stayed here such as: Fellini, Marconi, several popes, and Bill Wrobleski.
View of Lago di Bolsena from near the end of my hike. I’ll leave the lake behind tomorrow.
Approaching Montefiascone
100 kilometers from St Peter’s
The piazza outside my hotel
View from Rocca di Papi above town
Pellegrini checking out the view

A 12th century German bishop traveling to Rome sent an assistant ahead to scout the route and find good wines for the bishop. He was instructed to write ‘Est’ (Latin for ‘It is’ or ‘There is’) on the door of the inns with good wines. The assistant was so impressed with the quality of the wine they served in a Montefiascone Inn that he wrote “Est! Est! Est!” On its door. Now this name is used for wines in the region.
View from the top of my hotel. Rome is over those hills.

Olives, blocked road and a beautiful basilica

  1. You look great with a goatee and stash. What an amazing trip you are having. I don’t know how you did it, but the goat smell came through the video!😧😂

  2. After spending 4 weeks in Portugal and Spain, I wholeheartedly agree on the smoking thing. I was surprised and disgusted by how many smokers I encountered.
