A pretty uneventful day. Mostly downhill with few scenic views.
The highlight for me was walking for an hour over a beautiful ancient Roman road. I like to imagine all the people that have walked on it before me.
Tomorrow is my last day on pilgrimage. As planned, I’m going to skip the last four stages leading into Rome. (About half of which are very urban.)
Instead, tomorrow, I’ll walk about 12 miles then take a train to the edge of Rome. From there, I’ll walk the last few miles to St. Peter’s to complete the pilgrimage.
One final view from the top of Montefiascone as I started my hike this morning Looking back at Montefiascone as I left townPart of the Roman road I followed today. It’s part of the Via Cassia, a major military and trade route, that dates back over 2000 years. It’s a Jubilee year in Rome so they’ve added these commemorative markers to the trail There was a hot springs spa along the trail today. I met one pilgrim who was going to visit it. The sulfur smell was pretty strong as I walked past. Viterbo is a big busy city. Lots of bustle. Once past the outer section though, there is a somewhat charming old town.Piazza San Lorenzo and the Duomo di ViterboThere are plenty of old stone buildings like this throughout a relatively large old town areaI’ve had bruschetta a bunch of times on the trip. My favorite was the salmon and anchovy (not shown) in Manarola, and the sampler last night in Montefiascone.

Avid reader, but I seldom comment. I appreciate walking with you vicariously, but probably couldn’t hang with an old man! Love Italy and especially the food, and of course the gelato!

Those Roman road sure have some staying power.
