Day 38 – Rome

Pilgrimage completed.

Walked 450 miles.

Took over 1.16 million steps.

Slept in 37 different hotel rooms.

Took 2965 photos and videos.

Had 3-4 names on my shoes each day of people for whom I prayed. This totaled ~109 different names. I hope you all felt the love.

Cursed out loud to myself at the top of my lungs… 1 time. (That involved an ungodly amount of mud.)

No official count on: pizzas eaten, glasses of wine drank or pounds of pasta consumed. Let’s just say… a sh*t-ton.

I walked for several miles on this road cut into the rocks. It’s called “Vie Cave” and amazingly dates back to the Etruscans (over 2500 years ago!).
AI told me this was “Spigariello.” Not sure that’s right. Walked through miles of it today.
Tom from Iowa walking uphill. We met him back before Sienna.
Foro Cassio – Church of Santa Maria. Dates back over 1000 years. Sigeric stayed here back in 990.
After reaching Vetrella, I took a train to Rome which allowed me to miss a few less scenic stages.
Arriving in Rome
Pilgrimage completed!
Pilgrim’s passport. I’ll get my last stamp at St. Peter’s tomorrow.
Rome is always busy but this year it’s busier than usual due to the Jubilee. Here’s a taste of what it’s like, along with some thoughts from me at the end.

Today’s Data

Start Temp: 54

Finishing Temp: 71

Walked another 2 miles or so in Rome, that I did not record.

  1. Well done, thy good and faithful servant!Praying that your body find comfort, rest, and an incredible charge of new energy to return home.

You have now “made me” add this Via Francigena to my bucket list (lol).

  2. I’d never admit this in public, Bill, but you are amazing! Congratulations on the accomplishment. And hey, nice legs!

    1. Chicks dig my legs.

And, by chicks, I mean Shirley. She never said that, but I can read her mind (although she claims I can’t).

  3. Loved following along and seeing all the beautiful places you’ve been. Congratulations on your successful pilgrimage! Safe travels home.

  4. Congratulations on your arrival in Rome! It’s was a delight to walk along with you for the 450 miles. Enjoy, rest, and have a wonderful trip home.

  5. Congratulazioni, Guillermo!

Yes, we felt the love and were grateful for it.

Looks like spigariello to me. LOL

Who had the better stamps? Italy, Spain, Portugal, or France? Enquiring pilgrims want to know….

    1. This is a good question.

      Spain wins. Creative and colorful.

I don’t really need a Compestela, but I love collecting the stamps. It’s such a nice keepsake.

  6. Congrats on another Pilgrimage! I have enjoyed each and every Pilgrimage, but this one seems so very special adding family and friends along the way. Your Mom is with you – and proud of your accomplishment – and happy that you are there.

I look forward to your next Pilgrimage (wink) next year!

    All the best,
    Karen

  8. Congratulations on another successful pilgrimage! I’ve been lurking in the background following you and it was entertaining and beautiful views like usual. I would have liked to see the video of the swearing in the mud though, and more cows!! Have a safe flight home and wear a mask!!

  9. A belated congratulations! I’m very impressed that guy of your advanced age can travel so far on foot.

  10. Congratulations on another successful pilgrimage, Bill! I loved following along with you until I left for Paris on the 7th. I just returned from a solo trip to France. I look forward to seeing what’s in store for you in 2026.
