Day 52 – El Burgo Ranero

Still flat. Still straight. Only 11.5 miles and plenty of shade, so another good day. (Every day is good out here!)

Bill, why did you want to do the Camino in the first place?

I read about it sometime around 2004 or 2005, and I immediately wanted to do it. There was no single reason that I liked the idea. I think it appealed to me for several reasons:

  • I love Europe and traveling this way sounded fun.
  • I love to hike, but I don’t like camping. So a hike with nightly lodging seemed ideal.
  • I love history. Following in the footsteps of so many others is just plain cool.
  • I was a new Christian at the time, so pursuing a religious trek was appealing.

I had the Camino in the back of my mind for years, and even tried to recruit my sister and nephew to do it. In 2011, I saw the movie “The Way.” That just rekindled my desired to take it on.

Basically, its always been “when” not “if” for me with regards to the Camino.

This was what the hike was like almost all day. I’m so thankful for the people that planted trees all along the route. There were thousands stretched out over many miles, so we were in shade almost all day.
Mid-morning break with Walter, Allison, Rhonda, Eduardo, Lucy, Christie and Bonnie.
My hostal in El Burgo Ranere. The town is super small but my room is nice. It even has screens on the window! It’s the first time I’ve had a screen on the window in over 50 days!
As you know, I love the Roman bridges. This one is outside of Sahagun. I wonder if any of my ancestors walked over this bridge? Seems possible.
Here’s the luggage transport service picking up bags at an albergue. Many people use these services. My bag hasn’t been an issue for me, so I’m fine carrying it, but I can see why others may not want to.

  1. Love the videos Bill. Thank you so much. Like you the Camino has been calling me for over twenty years now. And finally my time has come to do the Frances for April 2023. And…like you if I enjoy it I would very much like to do the Le Puy and Frances together. You are inspiring me to BE. Thank you 🙏

  2. So screens get you to a 2 star rating. What does it take to get you to 3 stars? Appreciate the room tour. (From your video appreciation society of followers.)

  3. Bill, thank you so much for sharing this journey with us. I love every part, from the videos, to photos, to answering our questions.

I also started thinking about the Camino after seeing “The Way”. I immediately started researching about the trail on the internet. Planning to walk the Camino in the future with my hubby, Justin. It is motivating the two of us to keep up with our daily walking despite the fall weather here in PA and the diminishing daylight after work.
